ADAPT

deAf DigitAl PlaTform (ADAPT) project aims to develop the first e-platform adapted to d/Deaf teenagers, aged from13 to 21 years old. Indeed, it is the age range when students learn how to become independent, how to advocate and the needs become crucial. With pedagogical elements that are easily understood by d/Deaf students, ADAPT consortium aims to support middle and high school teachers to nurture students’ interest in school learning, to open d/Deaf teenagers to the world, to arouse their curiosity, to develop their knowledge and to give them the means to communicate with their environment, including their family and friends. What then allow them to improve their learning performance & to enhance their access to abstract concepts & reading potentialities.

The e-platform will be proposed in two different & complementary media:
• a website to gather all the available contents
• an enriched “culturally accessible” digital platform focused on the six following thematic topics:
• Deaf History
• Art
• Deaf Culture (e.g., Deaf Rights)
• Science
• Entrepreneurship
• Ecology

The ADAPT project brings together 6 complementary specialized partners; members of HIPEN (the European Network for Professionals working with People with Hearing Problems):
School with boarding for student with hearing and speech disabilities “11th May” (Jagodina, Serbia) which is one of the oldest state special education institution in Serbia and Yugoslavia, and the fourth special educational school for children with hearing and speech impairments.
Turin Institute for the Deaf (Turin, Italy) which is specializing in providing a wide range of services and activities to people who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind.
Special Technological High School for Hearing Impaired (Cluj-Napoca, Romania), an institute that works with about 200 deaf students, from kindergarten to high school.
Special school and education Center for the Deaf (Kraków, Poland) an institution that educates young people who are d/Deaf & hearing impaired.
Educational Center for Deaf & Hard of Hearing of Lithuania (Vilnius, Lithuania), a public educational institution providing education from pre-school to upper secondary stages for the hearing-impaired students.
GAUDEM College (Madrid, Spain), a school which embraces special & mainstream education for deaf & hearing students for over 40 years.

What does this logo mean, according to Nicola Della Maggiora, our graphic designer?

The logo represents an open book from which the mouse arrow comes out. Through this design, I, as a designer, wanted to point out the need and the right of Deaf people to have equal access to any educational material. The book is grey, because it is an object, but the arrow is orange, thus colourful and vivid, showing the benefits of accessible digital learning materials. Therefore, through this project, as a Consortium, we want to emphasize on the fact that in this digital world, accessible education can and should contain a comprehensive collection of proven strategies and tools for effective online teaching, based on the principles of learning as a social process.
